Nursing care services are provided to patients in many areas of Weiss Memorial Hospital and are organized to provide effective care to patients. A descriptive overview of the various patient care areas and services offered are as follows:
8 South This 24-bed unit cares for patients recovering from orthopedic and other kinds of surgery. Most of the patients receive major joint and limb replacements and have had procedures performed on their backs and necks, hips, femurs and bowels.
7 South This 30-bed unit cares for patients with cancer. Patients here receive chemotherapy and are treated for red blood cell, nutritional and various metabolic disorders.
6 South This 34-bed unit cares for patients diagnosed with heart failure, irregular heartbeats chest pain and loss of consciousness (syncope). The unit is divided into areas that care for patients released from intensive care (ICU step-down), need constant supervision by automatic measurement and transmission of data (telemetry), or require general medical-surgical care. A total of 18 beds are capable of telemetry monitoring: six of these beds are designated as ICU step-down beds.
5 Northwest This 34-bed unit cares for medical-surgical patients. Ten beds are designated for patients with immune system disorders like HIV. Two negative pressure rooms are available for patients requiring airborne isolation. This unit mainly cares for patients with respiratory infections and inflammation, simple pneumonia and pleurisy, digestive disorders, cellulitis, septicemia and HIV with major complications.
4 Northwest The University of Chicago Hospitals and Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital and Care Network have combined their expertise to develop an acute, 26-bed rehabilitation unit on this floor. The program offers comprehensive rehabilitation for patients admitted with disabilities. Each patient is assigned a team of specially trained staff who work collaboratively with the patient and family to help the patient become as functionally independent as possible.
Intensive Care Unit Our state of the art intensive care unit is a 16-bed combined medical/surgical and coronary intensive care unit. The unit cares for patients with unstable angina or who are recovering from vascular, open heart or stent placement surgery; congestive heart failure; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; or pneumonia.
Substance Abuse Unit This unit offers a full range of support services for chemically dependent patients. In-hospital, day hospital care, out-patient care and support group meetings provide continuity for patients in treatment.
Emergency Department This 7-bed unit offers comprehensive emergency medical care to patients 24 hours a day. Specially trained in emergency medicine, physicians, nurses, paramedic technicians and clerical staff coordinate treatment for a variety of medical, surgical, orthopedic, pediatric and obstetric problems of patients visiting or brought to the department. Specialty consultation is available for most medical problems, and patients are treated or referred for appropriate medical care.
Surgical Services Surgeries at Weiss can be performed in the William J. Tannenbaum Ambulatory Surgery Center or in an adjacent suite of operating rooms. The ambulatory surgery center offers patients pre-operation preparation for same-day admissions, anesthesia consultations and recovery room functions for intravenous sedation procedures. The center consists of seven bays for patients and two rooms for minor procedures, one of which houses a Yag laser. The Weiss operating room sector consists of nine suites and a five-bed pre-operation holding area. In addition, a seven-bed post-anesthesia care unit is located adjacent to the suite of operating rooms.
