About five million Americans suffer from chronic wounds. Often, these wounds won’t heal due to a variety of factors, such as circulatory problems, diabetes, arthritis, kidney disease, age, diet and smoking. Without proper treatment, these wounds may become infected or in some cases even require amputation if not treated timely and effectively. No one has to live with these wounds anymore.
The Wound Healing Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital offers an advanced healing program that includes state-of-the-art treatment for non-healing and chronic wounds. We can help with wounds such as:
- Diabetic ulcers
- Leg ulcers
- Pressure ulcers (or bed sores)
- Skin tears or lacerations
- Burn wounds
- Traumatic wounds
- Wounds associated with radiation treatment
- Post-operation wounds and infections
- Wounds associated with skin grafts
- Bone infections
- Gangrene
Specialists working for you Our Wound Healing Center is staffed with a specially trained team of doctors, nurses, and therapists all dedicated to healing chronic wounds. Wounds can be complex and each requires an individualized course of treatment to promote healing. We offer the expertise and technology to support the needs of our patients. And our results are excellent, with most chronic wounds improved within weeks.
Our team will work closely with your primary care physician. Your treatment plan will be developed by one of our staff physicians specializing in wound care, and a nurse case manager will be your primary contact at the Wound Healing Center. Medicare/Medicaid, most HMOs, and other private insurance companies cover most treatments.
How to start healing
1. Generally the physician presently treating your wound will refer you to our Center. Or, you can make your appointment directly.
2. When you call for your first appointment, we’ll ask you a few questions about your wound and health in general.
3. Before beginning treatment, our team of doctors, nurses, and therapists will thoroughly evaluate your wound and review your health and medical history in order to determine how to best treat you.
4. Tests might be conducted to tell us more about your blood flow and skin condition as well as to determine if infection present.
5. Together with your physician, we’ll develop a treatment program based on our assessment of your special needs. Your program will likely involve regular visits to the Center. Your progress is meticulously documented, monitored and adjusted as necessary.
6. We are in constant communication with your doctor throughout your wound care. Once your wound is healed, you’ll return to your doctor for follow-up care. And of course, you’ll continue with your personal doctor for any related health conditions like diabetes or hypertension.
Your role in healing Much of the success of your treatment depends on you. We’ll count on you to follow instructions carefully and watch your progress closely. You’ll learn how to care for your wound at home, such as how to change dressings and how to protect yourself from further injuries. We’re always here to answer questions and to give the support you need to continue to heal.
