Strauss Cancer Center at Weiss

The Strauss Cancer Center at Weiss Memorial Hospital began 25 years ago as a unique entity in a community hospital to promote the research and treatment of cancer.  Today Weiss' dedicated, on-site oncologists continue to provide highly personalized attention to our patients and their families.  On call 24 hours, seven days a week, the oncology team remains highly accessible to those who need us most.

Additionally, patients at Weiss have access to the latest anti-cancer drugs and therapies.  Strauss Cancer Center at WeissOur physicians conduct wide-ranging, leading cancer research, resulting in cancer treatment and research studies aimed at identifying more effective chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.  This enables Weiss patients to receive the widest possible range of treatment options.

Our oncology physicians, who work closely with the urology and radiation oncology departments, provide advanced and aggressive therapy. Our protocol section, which provides Strauss cancer center with its state-of-the-art research programs, integrates a variety of modalities, such as the Cancer & Leukemia Group B (CALGB), a national research consortium; the National Cancer Institutes Clinical Trials Support Unit Studies; and FDA-supervised pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies clinical trials. Treatments ranging from simple injections to aggressive therapy are carried out daily in our center.

For more information about our clinical trials, contact Peggy Kotowski, RN, BSN, BCN, at (773) 564-5041 or pkotowski@weisshospital.com.

Weiss has developed several programs to help cancer patients and their families cope with the impact of the disease. A "second opinion" program allows people a chance to reassure themselves of a diagnosis and their therapy options. Participants in this program can learn about all cancer therapies offered through Weiss, including information about clinical trials of new cancer treatments not yet widely available at other hospitals.

Moreover, an outpatient cancer support group enables patients to discuss and share concerns and uncertainties that often accompany a cancer prognosis. Weiss' "Look Good, Feel Better" program helps patients discover the importance of maintaining positive outlooks and "putting on a good face" during chemotherapy treatment. A 1998 Weiss Memorial Hospital survey rated the Strauss Cancer Center at Weiss "number one" in patient satisfaction.
