The University of Chicago Bone and Joint Replacement Center at Weiss provides innovative solutions for individuals experiencing disability from arthritis and other adult orthopedic problems including deformities, infections, traumatic injuries, failed joint replacements, and cancer.
A highly specialized treatment team at the center offers a variety of treatment options, considering every alternative before orthopedic surgery. Each patient’s individual needs, from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation, are met to help the patient move toward an active, pain-free lifestyle.
Bone and joint replacement center physicians and surgeons use state-of-the-art surgical and nonsurgical techniques to provide advanced treatments. The center is a program of the University of Chicago Hospitals’ section of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine, which was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 20 orthopedic programs in the nation.
The center also offers free seminars to the public on bone and joint treatment options. Patients who will have surgery learn about their surgery through wall charts, brochures, and bone and joint models.
After conducting a thorough history and physical examination including X-rays, a physician may recommend medication, injection therapy, physical therapy, or another form of treatment. Or, the physician may consider the option of a joint replacement. Joint replacement helps to relieve pain and disability caused by arthritis and other orthopedic problems or disorders.
More than 500,000 total hip and knee replacements are performed in the United States every year. This is a procedure that has been used over the last three decades with a high degree of success and with minimal risk.
